  • Vibration Control

Articulation is improved because mechanical energy can no longer introduce vibrations into the building structure, micro-phonics to tube electronics and cables, mis-tracking of phono stylus and laser beam, digital clocks, loudspeakers and microphones, connections, etc. Vibrations are a two-way street, and elimination of feedback loops, ringing and resonances mean your system becomes an improved, more enjoyable version of its natural self. "We know of no other acoustical product that effects all sound quality attributes. We know of no other acoustical product that is as equal for noise control effectiveness as it is for sound quality. We know of no other acoustical product that is as easy to install."

  • Effective Turntable Isolation Techniques for Superior Sound Quality

When it comes to enjoying vinyl records, the quality of sound reproduction is paramount. One often overlooked factor that can significantly affect audio performance is vibration. Vibrations can cause unwanted noise, distortion, and even damage to your turntable and records. To achieve the best listening experience, mastering effective turntable isolation techniques is essential. This article explores practical methods to reduce vibrations and enhance your vinyl playback. Understanding Turntable Isolation Techniques Turntable isolation techniques are designed to minimize the transmission of vibrations from external sources to the turntable. These vibrations can come from footsteps, speakers, or even the turntable’s own motor. Without proper isolation, these disturbances can cause the stylus to skip or produce unwanted noise, degrading the sound quality. There are several approaches to isolating your turntable: Isolation platforms : These are specially designed bases that absorb and dissipate vibrations. Isolation feet : Rubber or spring-loaded feet that reduce vibration transfer from the surface to the turntable. Mass loading : Adding weight to the turntable to increase stability. Placement : Positioning the turntable away from vibration sources. Each method has its advantages and can be combined for optimal results. Turntable on an shelf can use an isolation platform to reduce vibrations Isolation Platforms Isolation platforms are one of the most effective ways to reduce vibrations. These platforms are made from materials like dense wood, acrylic, or composite layers combined with damping materials such as sorbothane or rubber. The platform acts as a buffer, absorbing vibrations before they reach the turntable. For example, placing your turntable on a high-quality isolation platform can significantly reduce the impact of vibrations caused by nearby speakers or foot traffic. Some platforms also feature adjustable feet to fine-tune the level and stability. Isolation Feet Isolation feet are small but powerful components that can be attached to the bottom of your turntable. They work by decoupling the turntable from the surface it rests on, absorbing vibrations and preventing them from reaching the platter and tonearm. Isolation feet come in various designs: Rubber feet : Simple and affordable, rubber feet provide basic vibration damping. Spring-loaded feet : These offer isolation by suspending the turntable on springs. Sorbothane feet : Made from a viscoelastic polymer, these feet absorb a wide range of frequencies. Constrained Layer Damper feet : Multi layered, weight load activated, composite material feet provide vibration control from as low as 5Hz . Using isolation feet is a cost-effective way to improve sound quality without investing in a full isolation platform. Are Turntable Isolation Feet Worth It? Many vinyl enthusiasts wonder if investing in isolation feet is worthwhile. The answer depends on your setup and environment. If your turntable is placed on a sturdy, vibration-free surface, isolation feet might offer only marginal improvements. However, in environments with moderate foot traffic, speaker vibrations, or less stable furniture, isolation feet can make a noticeable difference. For example, if you live in an apartment with neighbours above or below, or if your turntable is near powerful speakers, isolation feet can help reduce the transmission of vibrations that cause audio distortion. Additionally, isolation feet are easy to install and portable, making them a practical choice for those who want to experiment with vibration control without major modifications. Turntable equipped with spring-loaded isolation feet for vibration reduction Additional Tips for Minimising Vibrations Beyond platforms and feet, there are other practical steps you can take to improve your turntable’s performance: Choose the right surface : Place your turntable on a heavy, solid piece of furniture like a thick wooden table or dedicated audio rack. Avoid glass or metal surfaces that can amplify vibrations. Use a dedicated turntable stand : These stands are designed to isolate audio equipment and often include built-in vibration damping. Avoid placing turntables near speakers : Speaker vibrations can travel through surfaces and affect playback. Keep a reasonable distance between your turntable and speakers. Add mass to your turntable : Some audiophiles add weight to the platter or base to increase inertia and reduce susceptibility to vibrations. Check your turntable’s internal components : Ensure the motor and platter bearings are well-maintained and lubricated to minimise internal vibrations. Why Proper Turntable Isolation Matters Proper turntable isolation is not just about protecting your equipment; it directly impacts the quality of your listening experience. Vibrations can cause the stylus to mistrack, leading to distortion, skipping, and even damage to your precious vinyl records. By implementing effective isolation techniques, you ensure that the stylus accurately follows the grooves of the record, delivering clear, rich, and detailed sound. This is especially important for audiophiles who demand the highest fidelity from their vinyl collections. For those interested in exploring more about turntable vibration isolation , there are numerous resources and products available to help you tailor your setup to your specific needs. Enhancing Your Vinyl Experience with Isolation Investing time and effort into turntable isolation techniques pays off with a more enjoyable and immersive vinyl listening experience. Whether you choose to use isolation platforms, feet, or a combination of methods, the reduction of unwanted vibrations will reveal the true potential of your records. Remember, every setup is unique, so experiment with different isolation solutions to find what works best for your environment. Small adjustments can lead to significant improvements in sound quality. By prioritising vibration control, you protect your equipment and preserve the integrity of your vinyl collection for years to come.

Customer reviews on premium audio equipment Listener feedback on acoustic services client satisfaction with room acoustics control. Our Clients Comments Hi Discerning Listener, Damn, this is incredible, I'd thought I've squeezed everything out of my speakers with the old feet... but these isolation feet has made a huge difference with voicing and instruments and the extremely low floor noise has revealed so much more.. sound stage has widened so much on Radio head The King Of limbs side 2 with intricate details all out in open clear as... no smearing of instruments on high-level listening.. on the In Rainbows Album which is the 45rpm version box-set ... I think it's made the biggest sound difference on my system just by putting the isolation feet underneath my speakers. It's revealed what my system is still capable of.. Can't thank EVP and you enough Kind Regards Chris Western Australia ---------------------------------------------------- "An exemplary resource if you want to get the most out of an audio system. This applies to components, room design, set up, system matching and excellent of results. It is rare to find someone who displays such a high degree of integrity which is matched by his remarkable insight and skills within the audio world." M.P. Western Districts Victoria 3300 ---------------------------------------------------- I have dealt with T.D.L since 2012 and he is the most outstanding person I have had the pleasure to deal with in my 35 year interest in audio. T.D.L has delivered a level of audio performance well beyond my expectations with expert and independent advice covering everything from listening room design/construction, electrical requirements, room isolation/acoustics through to equipment selection/setup. He is a person of great character who always puts the customer first, which is unusual in a market dominated by HiFi component sellers. If your goal is sonic excellence, I can highly recommend T.D.L's services. Andrew, CROYDON VIC 3136 ---------------------------------------------------- Received the EVPs last week and installed it on my Rega, It works a treat …! I’m quite surprised how much more I can hear out of the grooves..at first I thought it was just placebo….but when I listen in, definitely i can hear more of the clarity in space between instruments and note sustaining with instruments as well the ambience of a singer in a room…I could hear it before but its more noticeable with these isolation feet on Chris, PERTH W.A. 6105 ---------------------------------------------------- A few of weeks ago, The Discerning Listener visited to enjoy some music together and asked to try some Equipment Vibration Protectors under my Ypsilon phono stage, step up transformer, preamp, and DAC. It was an interesting experiment as the equipment is all on quality equipment racks but the difference they made under each piece of equipment was substantial and cumulative. Placed under the phono stage the soundstage opened up considerably; wider and deeper. All the changes were magnified when they were added under the step up transformer. Of major interest to me was the fact that a distortion which have been present at one particular frequency disappeared suggesting that it was microphonic transmission through the equipment which the EVP's constrained layer damper removed. Adding the vibration absorption to the preamp provided further benefit and trying them with and without the DAC also produced major benefits. The only thing it didn’t help with the Oladra streamer. Needless to say I purchased four sets of them; it was a relatively inexpensive addition to the system with gains far exceeding the relative cost. The base system includes the Ypsilon gear mentioned above, Ypsilon Hyperion power amplifiers, a Doehmann Helix One turntable, Wilson Benesh stands under the amplifiers, an SGR rack for the Pre Amplifier and high quality Aspire stands under step up transformer, phono stage and DAC, All in all, I highly recommend the EVP's. Name withheld for confidentiality. 3000 ---------------------------------------------------- I would like to give you an insight into our experiences in working with The Discerning Listener. When I first came in to the show room I really didn't know anything about home audio. All I knew was that I wanted a room that felt like a cinema, and I wanted to deal with people who were honest. T.D.L. gave me both. During our first visit with T.D.L., I quickly realised that system design would be a critical factor if we wanted an amazing result. Our room started as an empty shell and it really did sound quite terrible. Yet the end result was an area that far exceeded our expectations. I was most impressed with T.D.L's expertise, knowledge and attention to detail was excellent. I never knew there were so many important factors in designing a home entertainment space. T.D.L. guided us through every aspect, such as electrical, insulation types, room dimensions, light control, component selection, flooring and furnishings and so on. In the end we even changed the shape of our ceiling. The service we received from the installation was excellent too. All work was neat and professional, very polite and courteous as well. I would also like to thank T.D.L. for all the support. Thank you for answering all our calls and emails. Thank you for your guidance and patience. Thank you for all your time and dedication. We love our room and it's the focal point of our home. We always watch movies with our friends and family and our visitors are always amazed at how good the experience is. Finally, thank you for giving us an entertainment space that puts Gold Class to shame! Regards K & T Narre Warren VIC 3085 ---------------------------------------------------- The best thing about The Discerning Listener is price has nothing to do with performance. I have a tendency to smile a lot, because I have a system performance that makes the hair stand on the back of my neck, which most people crave and/or have near misses/glimpses of this. Worst of all is most people have discovered their wallets have become a lot lighter through this experience. Put your hand up if this has happened to you, my hand is up! Unfortunately, almost everyone has bought equipment, taken it home, set it up, then realised it doesn't sound right. All this can be avoided, I have had the greatest privilege having T.D.L. set up and design my system, I highly recommend you pay T.D.L. a visit. Now my wallet is getting heavier because I don't spend money upgrading my system anymore, you will too, once you get to T.D.L.! Aaron, DOREEN ----------------------------------------------------

Turntable or Record Player When comparing an entry-level plastic record player with a modular composite material quality turntable, the differences come into sharp relief across several dimensions—performance, price, durability, upgradeability, longevity, and overall return on investment. Let’s unpack each area in detail: 1. Performance Entry-Level Plastic Record Players: These devices are built primarily to be accessible. They use low-cost plastic parts which, while lightweight, tend to offer less mass and vibrational stability than higher-grade materials. Their tonearms, cartridges, and drive systems are generally simplified—designed to play records “well enough” for casual listening. This can mean less accurate tracking, more susceptibility to vibrations, and a generally “flatter” sound profile. For many newcomers, this performance is acceptable as it offers a gentle introduction to vinyl without overwhelming the wallet. However, audiophiles may notice a lack of detail, dynamic range, and overall sonic fidelity compared to higher-end models. Modular Composite Material Turntables: Turntables in this category are built with precision in mind. Composite materials—often engineered to dampen unwanted resonance—offer a stable, inert chassis that minimizes vibration and enhances the clarity of reproduced sound. With carefully-designed tonearms, motor drives (often belt-drive or premium direct-drive systems), and options for fine-tuning, these models deliver substantially improved tracking, reduced noise, and richer, more nuanced audio performance. Their modular nature means that each component is optimized individually, often translating into an overall sound that is detailed and immersive—a key benefit for users who demand high-end audio reproduction. 2. Price Entry-Level Plastic Record Players: The biggest appeal here is affordability. Their low price point makes them an attractive choice for beginners or casual users. The cost savings, however, come with the trade-offs in material quality and performance, meaning that while the initial investment is minimal, these players may not satisfy more discerning listeners as they upgrade their audio expectations. Modular Composite Turntables: Higher upfront costs mark these systems. The premium materials, precision engineering, and modular design—which allows users to upgrade specific components over time—justify the price tag. This higher initial investment can be seen as a long-term commitment to quality, where future upgrades and improved audio performance contribute to a better overall return on investment. 3. Durability Entry-Level Plastic Record Players: Using inexpensive plastic makes these devices more vulnerable to physical wear and tear. The rigidity and resilience of quality materials are compromised, meaning that with regular use, parts may degrade, become less stable, or start exhibiting issues like misalignment and increased resonance. This can limit their lifespan, especially under heavy or long-term usage conditions. Modular Composite Turntables: In contrast, the composite materials used in high-end turntables are selected for both their acoustic properties and durability. These systems are engineered to withstand the rigors of frequent use, offering a robust structure that maintains precision over time. Additionally, even as some parts experience wear, the modular design allows for individual component replacements rather than an entire system replacement. 4. Upgrade-ability Entry-Level Plastic Record Players: Typically, these players are built as closed systems. Their integrated designs do not encourage or facilitate modifications; hence, users looking to enhance performance must eventually invest in a new unit rather than upgrading an existing one. This limits the potential for long-term improvements in sound quality. Modular Composite Turntables: One of the key advantages of a modular design is the ability to upgrade or swap out components. Users can start with a high-quality base unit and later invest in improvements—upgraded tonearms, cartridges, or even a superior motor system—tailoring the system to match evolving audio preferences. This flexibility not only allows for steady performance improvements but also extends the overall life of the investment. 5. Longevity Entry-Level Plastic Record Players: Due to the compromise in materials and design, these entry-level models often face issues over time. Plastic components may warp or degrade, and non-serviceable integrated parts can lead to a shorter overall lifespan. In the long run, the need for replacement may add up, especially as the technology becomes outdated. Modular Composite Turntables: Designed with longevity in mind, these turntables leverage premium materials and a robust build. With proper maintenance and periodic upgrading of key components, they can remain state-of-the-art for decades. Their engineering also makes them more resistant to the wear and tear that plagues cheaper counterparts, ensuring sustained high performance over the years. 6. Overall Return on Investment (ROI) Entry-Level Plastic Record Players: For newcomers or casual listeners on a tight budget, the entry-level plastic record player offers an attractive “first step” into vinyl that comes with minimal financial risk. While the immediate ROI in terms of low cost is high, these players often see diminishing returns as the user’s expectations grow, eventually necessitating a costly upgrade. Modular Composite Turntables: While the initial price is higher, the ability to upgrade individual components and the superior performance delivered over time mean that these turntables can provide excellent value for audiophiles and serious listeners. The long-term ROI is bolstered by lower maintenance costs, the potential for incremental improvements, and the sustained high quality of the listening experience. Final Thoughts In summary, the decision between an entry-level plastic record player and a modular composite quality turntable hinges on your listening priorities and long-term audio goals. For casual or budget-conscious users, a plastic-based unit offers an accessible entry point into the world of vinyl, albeit with limitations in audio fidelity and upgrade potential. However, for those who view their turntable as a long-term investment—seeking superior performance, flexible upgrade paths, and enduring durability—a modular composite turntable is an investment that pays dividends both sonically and financially over time.
